Govt.
Degree College for Women, Srikakulam was first started in the year 1968 in
the premises of Govt. girls high school, Srikakulam as a comprehensive
college for Intermediate and Undergraduate courses. Site to an extent of
12.6 acres was acquired and the main building was constructed by the Govt.
agency in 1979 and the college was shifted to new building and continued
function in its own building.
During 1996 intermediate courses were bifurcated and the
Intermediate and Undergraduate classes are run under Shift system in the
same campus from 1996 onwards.
This Institution has U.G.C. recognition under 2(F) and
12(b) from the academic year 1970. This year i.e., during 2005-2006. The
student strength on rolls is 1025. This is the only college in the entire
Srikakulam District offering education exclusively for girl students at
undergraduate level. Most of the students come from rural areas of
Srikakulam District and belong to S.C., S.T., B.C. categories. Majority of
these belong to economically poor sections of the society.
This college has been imparting instruction in the

Recently in March 2005 The NAAC Peer Team visited this college and awarded
B+ grade.
There is well equipped Physical education Department with adequate play
ground and gymnasium for the Physical Development of the students studying
in this college. There is a well equipped Computer Laboratory for given
proper Training in computer Education. IGNOU study center has been
sanctioned to this college from the academic year 2005-2006.
Further, literary activities and cultural programmes are conducted at
frequent intervals to bring out the histrionic talents of the students.
Above all the entire staff in the college have been working with
coordination and striving hard for the all-round development of the college.
