The Department of
Adult and Continuing Education came into existence in the year 1975 with Dr.
D.Subba Rao as the Founder-Director and Head of the Department. Now the
department has grown into a major department with 7 Faculty Members. Ever since
its inception the Department has concentrated on extension activities besides
teaching and research. Living up to its noble objective of spreading literacy,
the department has successfully organized Adult Literacy Programmes in the
Districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari with financial assistance from the
University Grants Commission. As a result of its efforts, a total number of 31
Adult Education Centres have been started in various colleges affiliated to Andhra University, this department has
undertaken the responsibility of organizing National Adult Education Programme
in 120 centres on an experimental basis. Under the Mass
Programme for
functional literacy, as many as 1000 students per year are involved to impart
literacy to illiterate people in the five Coastal Districts of Andhra Pradesh.
This department has the distinction of being identified as the nodal
department to evaluate the Government Schemes relating to Adult Literacy and
Continuing Education Programmes in the districts of Srikakulam,
Visakhapatnam, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, etc.
The Department has organized out-reach progrmmes for house wives,
Neo-literates, Youth etc., in the areas of Brick Making and Machinery, Rural
Health and Sanitation, Food preservation, Interior Decoration, Screen Printing,
Hotel Management, Photography, Fashion Technology and Design, Beauty Therapy,
Spoken English and Computers etc., A staggering 600 such programmes have been
organized since its inception. So far 16 PhDs. and 5 M.Phil Degrees have been
awarded in Adult and Continuing Education.
The staff members of the Department have undertaken 10 evaluation
projects. Till now 60 research papers have been published by the faculty in
renowned journals. Two Senior Members of the Faculty have participated in
International Seminars.
