History
Hindi studies in Andhra University were initiated due to the inspiration gained at the call of Mahatma Gandhi during the independence movement. Due to the fore-thought of the academic personalities like Dr. C.R.Reddi and the Syndicate Members like Sri. Lakkaraju Subba Rao Hindi subject was made compulsory as a second language at Graduation level for B.Com (Hons) students in 1940. A Post Graduate Department in Hindi was established in August 1965 with 8 students in the Law College Building premises. The intake has risen to 35 students now besides an admission of 400 students through distance mode.
Building
A separate building ‘Hindi Bhavan' was constructed in 1978 for Hindi Department, with the 3 lakhs grant received from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, one lakh donation from Philanthropist Sri. R.K.Saraaf, FACOR in the name of his father Sriram Saraaf and one and half lakhs donation from Smt.(Late) Jayanti Venkata Lakshmi in the name of famous Telugu writer Kalaprapoorna Puripanda Appala Swami. The founder Professor G.Sundara Reddi was responsible to get the grant from Uttar Pradesh Government and FACOR. Where as Prof. S.M.Iqbal was instrumental in getting the donation from Smt. Jayanti Venkata Lakshmi for the construction of Puripanda Library Hall. Dr. Y.Lakshmi Prasad was instrumental in obtaining a grant of one and a half lakh rupees from the M.P. funds of Sri M.V.V.S. Murthy, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) for the Audio-Visual Equipment and in procuring other facilities for the department.
Faculty
The Department faculty at present comprises of five Professors, one Associate Professor and One Assistant Professor. The department had the fortune of having a galaxy of scholarly teachers and who include the founder Prof. G.Sundara Reddi (Rtd.), Prof. K.Raja Seshagiri Rao (Rtd.), Prof. P.Adeswara Rao (Rtd.), Prof. S.V.Madhava Rao (Rtd.), Prof. S.M.Iqbal, Dr. P.A.Raju (Expired), Dr. V.Satyanarayana (Rtd.), Prof. K.Leelavati, Prof. S.Sesharatnam, Prof. K.Sita Lakshmi, Dr. S.Pasupati Rao (Expired), Prof. S.Surappadu, Dr. Y.Lakshmi Prasad, Dr. Syed Meharun as faculty members besides other staff Dr. S.A.S.N.Varma (Research Scientist ‘C'), Dr. K.V.L.Kameswari (Teaching Assistant) and Dr. K.Shanti (Research Associate), Dr. V.Krishna and Dr. S.Sir Raju had served the department during 1990-1992 as Lecturers for short period and left the institution.
Three faculty members (Prof. P.Adeswara Rao, Prof. S.M.Iqbal, Prof. K.Sita Lakshmi) had been selected to teach abroad as visiting professors of Hindi by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. Two Teachers (Prof. P.Adeswara Rao and Dr. Y.Lakshmi Prasad) have been awarded prizes by Central Sahitya Academy. Many of the teachers have been honoured with national awards and honorary D.Litt., Degrees. The teachers of the department have published more than 110 books in Hindi, Telugu and English. Faculty Member Dr. Yerlagadda Lakshmi Prasad has been conferred the title of ‘PADMASRI' by the Government of India. He was also a Member of Parliament for six years during 1996-2002. So far a total 110 PhD., Degrees and 50 M.Phil., Degrees have been awarded in Hindi.
