The
Department was started in the year 1989 with Late Prof. L.S.R.Krishna Sastry
as Co-ordinator under the leadership of Prof. K.V.Ramana as the
Vice-chancellor and Dr. M.Gopalakrishna Reddy, as Registrar. The department
had the privilege of having eminent musicians and scholars as faculty
members. Sri Nedunuri Krishna Murthy was appointed as the visiting Professor
for a period of 5 years, from 1990. Sri Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao worked as
visiting Professor for a period of one year from 1995 July to 1996 July. The
others were viz., Smt. Arundhati Sarkar, Smt.Jayalakshmi and Kum. K.Renuka
Devi worked as part time lecturers in the formative years.
The department is housed in the first floor of the Hindi Bhavan with 4
rooms. It has acquired an OHP, some furniture and a small department library
over the past few years. A Computer sanctioned under the IX plan grant, is
yet to be installed in the department. The department now offers doctoral
programme in Linguistics. In 1994 Prof. (Smt.) V.Gowri Rammohan was assigned
as Coordinator in the Department of Music in addition to her placement in
the Department of Psychology and Parapsychology. In 1999, she was deputed to
the music department.
In addition to M.A. in Music the Department offers Ph.d. Programme in Music.
In 1991 and 2000 respectively, prizes were instituted by Sri A.S.Raja and
Smt. M.Vasundhara Gangadhar, for the candidate who secured 1st Rank in the
total percentages of marks obtained in M.A, both the years put together.
Eminent musicians like Smt D.K.Pattammal, Young Musicians, Priya Sisters and
Dr.Vempati Chinna Satyam, reputed Dancer visited the Department. The
Department has been organizing lecture demonstrations by eminent
personalities like Dr. S.Pinkapani, Sri N.Ch.Krishnamacharyulu, Prof.
Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana etc.
The Department organized Music programmes in association with other
organizations in the city. To train the students to give public music
concerts, they are initially trained and given an opportunity every week to
present a music concert with the accompaniments. These weekly Music Concerts
by students and staff began in August 1995 and are continuing to date. Every
year the department has been organizing series of concerts in connection
with the foundation day, i.e., 23rd September. The music concerts of not
only local artists but also renowned outsiders were invited to give their
music concerts. Department organized a National Conference on South Indian
Music sponsored by University Grants Commission. A Research Forum was mooted
during the conference with the intention of bring research activities taking
place in various Universities on to common platform.
