HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT

            As part of its Policy to encourage research in Demography, the Department of Family Welfare, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has established POPULATION RESEARCH CENTRES in the major states of the country. These Centres are established in reputed Research Institutes and Universities that provided the necessary infrastructure facilities, as parent Institutes. The Population Research Centres (PRCs) work as autonomous research institutes with 100 percent financial support from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.

         The PRC, Visakhapatnam is one of the 18 such Centres established in 1978 at ANDHRA UNIVERSITY. The main task of the Centre is to undertake research on various topics pertaining to population stabilization, demography, socio-demographic surveys and family welfare programmes in Andhra Pradesh. This Centre also undertakes independent and in-depth evaluation of the Family Welfare Programme in Andhra Pradesh to give feed back to the Department of Family Welfare, Government of India.

 

OBJECTIVES

           The specific objectives of the Population Research Centre are :

  • To undertake fundamental as well as policy oriented research in the field of population

  • To study the impact of economic and social change on the population growth of Andhra Pradesh

  • To collect and analyse primary data on fertility, mortality, migration and family welfare evaluation on a sample basis in Andhra Pradesh, and

  • To take-up special studies as may be entrusted by the State and Central Government from time to time.

 

STUDIES CONDUCTED

        Since its inception in 1978, PRC has carried out many surveys/studies relating to demography, evaluation of family welfare programmes and baseline surveys and evaluation of projects taken-up by Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). The most important large-scale surveys participated/taken-up by the PRC are National Family Health Survey (NFHS), funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Rapid Household Surveys under Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) project funded by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. In addition to these, the PRC also carried out Baseline and Endline Surveys for the RCH-Sub project of the state Government of Andhra Pradesh.

       Recently a Baseline Study under RCH Project was carried out for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and also a Baseline Study was carried out in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts under RCH-2 sponsored by the State Government. Presently PRC is engaged in carrying out an evaluation study on the functioning of ANM Schools funded by State Governments and Private Organizations. The PRC is designated as the Nodal Agency by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India for coordinating the study with other PRCs in the Country.

         So far, this research centre has completed 122 research studies covering the following broad areas:

  • General Demography.

  • Demographic Profiles of SCs and STs and other disadvantaged groups.

  • Role of Health Functionaries in Family Welfare Programme.

  • Socio-economic and demographic correlates.

  • Evaluation of Family Welfare Programme.

  • Operations Research on spacing methods

  • Population Policy and Programmes of Andhra Pradesh.

  • Studies on Reproductive and Child Health.
