The Centre for SAARC Studies was established in the Andhra
University in 1987-88 with the financial assistance of the UGC under the ‘Area
Studies Programme’. The Centre is mandated to undertake research studies in economic, political, social, and historical aspects relevant to South Asian Cooperation – both at national and regional levels. The Centre is distinct from the other Area Studies Centres in India, i.e., it has been concentrating on SAARC countries, as a subject of research study. After completing the three plan periods, the Centre has entered the fourth plan / phase (2004- 2009) and is working to establish a strong research base on SAARC.
