The Department is
the Nodal for Childline (1098) an emergency free telephone service
for the children in difficult circumstances such as street children, abused
children, children is
need of special care, child labour etc. This programmme is supported by the
Ministry of Social
Justice and Empowerment, UNICEF and CIF Mumbai. Under this services such as
shelter,
education, medical aid, repatriation to their homes etc.,are being provided to
children in need.
This programme was started in Visakhapatnam in January 2001.

The Department runs a family
counseling centre in the premises of Mahila Police Station situated in the
Visakhapatnam Police Commissionarate. Two trained Social Workers are employed
as counselors. It provides premarital and marital counseling.

Under the UGC special assistance
programme the Department is promoting self help groups in slum communities in
Visakhapatnam.

Family Life Education programmes are
conducted for the girl students of various colleges situated in Visakhapatnam.

The Department has significantly
contributed for the relief and rehabilitation of victims of disasters such as
Diviseema cyclone, Orissa super cyclone, Latur earthquake etc.
