The Institute of Transport Management was inaugurated in Andhra Pradesh on 10 june 1994 , with financial assistance from the Ministry of HRD. Govt of India under the Directorship of Prof.D.Panduranga Rao , who is also the APSRTC Chair Professor of Transport Management. 

      ITM functions on the Principle of interaction among the disciplines concerned with Planning , Economics, Management , Human Resources Development , Safety and Behavioral Science, Engineering and Futurology.

      The institute undertakes Research, Consultancy, Teaching and Training.

      The Institute has organized several Nationals and international Seminars, conferences and Conventions on issues related to transport management and safety.

      The Institutes has completed major research projects furnished by MHRD, AICTE , ISRO Planning Commission, UGC, Ministry of External Affairs, SAARC (Division). The Institute organized Training Programmes to the staff of Indian Railways, APSRTC, VUDA, Municipal Corporation, Police Department , R&B and National Highway Services, etc.,
