Department Profile

The Urdu courses were introduced from the year 1979-80, after the appointment of a lecturer in Urdu in the department of Hindi.  To start with a Junior Diploma Course in Urdu was introduced which became very popular among the students and later a Senior Diploma in Urdu Course was started during 1986-87.  Both these courses are part time evening courses.  There was a demand from the Urdu speaking population of this area to introduce PG & Research Programme in the University.  The Urdu department has separated from Hindi for administrative convenience in August, 1992 and the Urdu lecturer was appointed as Coordinator of Urdu courses, working directly under the control of the Principal.  During the year 1994-95 the M.A Degree Course was started and in 1995-96 Research Programme was introduced leading to PhD. Two part time teachers were appointed to handle the M.A. classes.  The M.A. Urdu course was continued till the year 1999-2000.  As the required posts of teaching staff were not sanctioned by the U.G.C., the University authorities decided to transfer this course to the School of Distance Education.  At present the two Diploma Courses and the Research Programme are being continued in the department.
