The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences was constituted in the year 1980 by merging the two former imrovised sections of 'English' and 'Commerce and Management' with a view to bringing them on par with other Departments of the Engineering College and ultimately to introduce diploma course in English language and M.Phil/ Ph.D., programme in this department. The department caters to the language needs of the first year UG students of all branches and handles the courses pertaining to management, economics and commerce for the engineering students. The teachers are also guiding students for M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees.

The teachers of the department are involved in research in the areas of British literature, Indian writing in English,Canadian literature and Diasporic Literatures.
