The
Department of metallurgical Engineering was established in 1981 as part
of Mechanical Engineering. During the
25 years of
its existence it has emerged as a leader in Metallurgical education in
the country. Its glorious past has been written in letters of Gold in
the history of Andhra University as the most successful academic program
initiated by the University. With an annual intake of 20 undergraduates,
over the years it has produced numerous Metallurgical engineers who
occupy key positions both in India & abroad. By virtue of being the only
Metallurgical Engineering Department in coastal Andhra Pradesh, it
caters to the needs of Metallurgical industry there.
The Department enjoys a
strong University – Industry interaction by way of extending consultancy
to the industry in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Technocrats often visit the
department and share their expertise with faculty and students. Most of
the undergraduate projects are carried out in the industries in and
around Visakhapatnam. Besides, the faculty takes up numerous sponsored
research projects in association with the industrial and R&D institutes.
Impressed with its performance, the National Board of Accreditation
accredited the department for 5 years in the year 2004. The ME program
offered by the Department in Industrial Metallurgy has been approved by
the AICTE in the year 2003. The Department is also the first of its kind
to offer M.Tech. program in Nanotechnology.
ALUMNI: Of the 450 graduates of the Department, many are well
placed in Industry and R&D organizations. Many of them pursued their
higher studies in esteemed institutions and universities in India and
abroad.
The Department houses a
Students’ Chapter of Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). In collaboration
with IIM Chapter, Visakhapatnam, the Department has successfully
organized three National meets, Conference of Students, Metallurgical
Engineers and Technologists, COSMET- 2000, 01 & 06 and PMMS 2005 and an
Indo-US workshop on Texture and Microstructure in Close-Packed Metals
and a workshop on Composite Materials in 2006, with active participation
from faculty, students and Metallurgists from various industries and
institutes.
