Man cannot
exist without plant life. the diversity amongst plants is an astonishing factor.
According to IUCN the estimated number of plant specifies on earth is 2,40,000.
A great number are evolved through hybridization and horticultural practices
through which quality fruits and vegetables, colourful blossoms are obtained.
Horticulture
and gardening unit is having a man power of 50 gardeners including 7 women
supervised by chief gardener, garden assistant and grand maistry one each. It is
under the overall control of Honorary Director. It undertakes plantation of
ornamentals, land scape gardening, lawns, avenue trees besides growing orchards.
They will be growing annual, biennial and perennials of aesthetic value. A few
lawns are developed in VC lodge, Guest Houses, Gepgraphy Department garden,Chemical Engineering Department garden, Geo Engineering Department
garden and the one opposite 4th Block of Engineering Hostel, the avenue trees planted
on the roadsides include species of Cassia, Syzygium, Pongamia, Sterculia,
Peetophorum, Acacia, Delonix, Casuarina, Polyalthia, Spathodea, Calophyllum,
Morinda etc. The fruit trees in the vacant lands include Cashew, Mango,
Soapnut,
Tamarind, Silk Cotton besides Teak Plantation. To check erosion in the North
Campus massive plantation of Green Bamboo was undertaken. Oriental Bamboo clumps
are also grown in some of the gardens. The campus has the unique possession of
red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) which are of more than 80 years old with
high commercial value in the international trade.
Besides
purchasing seeds, seeding and saplings the gardeners develop plants through stem
cutting, grafting and other vegetative propagation methods. Potted plants
numbering about 2000 are maintained mainly to cater to the needs of interior
decoration, display at important functions, meetings, parades etc. The equipment
available includes Lawn Mower, Telescopic Tree Pruner besides usual gardening
implements.
