The Department of Applied
Mathematics was originally started as the Department of Mathematical Physics in
the year 1942. Prof. S. Bhagavantham, a renowned physicist was in charge of the
Department in the beginning. He later became the
scientific advisor in the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Prof. A. Narasinga Rao took over
as Head of the Department in 1946. Subsequently,
eminent mathematicians like Prof. S. Meenakshi Sundaram and Prof. T. Venkata
Rayudu headed this department. It is well known that the book Theory of
Groups & Applications to Physical Problems jointly authored by Bhagavatham
and Venkatarayudu, first published by Andhra University Press and later by
Academic Press was also translated into Russian. Also the book Typical Means
written by S. Meenakshi Sundaram and K. Chandrasekharan acquired international
recognition.
In 1966, the Department of Mathematical
Physics was renamed as the Department of Applied Mathematics during headship of
Prof. T.Venkata Rayudu keeping in view the
importance of Mathematical applications in various branches of Physics,
Engineering, Biological and Social Sciences. Later, headship rotation in the
Department was introduced and many efficient Applied Mathematicians successfully
headed the Department.
