The Department of Biochemistry,
Andhra
University was established in year
1971. At present
7 teaching faculty members are working in the Department - 4
Professors, 1 Associated Professor and 2 Assistant Professors. All of them have
specialized in various fields of Biochemistry and most of them have obtained
Ph.D. Degrees and Post Doctorial training in leading National and International
institutes. Prof. B.Naganna (Late) steered the Department from 1971 to '76.
Prof. T.M.Radhakrishnan from 1976 to '80 & 1983 to '86, Prof. T.Goverdhana Reddi
from 1980 to '83 & 1998 to 2002, Prof. D.Siva Prasad from 1986 to '89, Prof.
T.Ramana from 1989 to '92, Prof. G.Seshagiri Rao from 1992 to '95 and Dr. A.Rama
Rao from 1995 to '98 have successively served as Heads of the Department. Prof.
D.Siva Prasad is heading the Department since October, 2002.
The Department offers a two year
M.Sc course in
Biochemistry, M.Phil. course in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Biochemistry. Till now
32 batches of M.Sc.
students have completed the course successfully. 20 candidates have obtained
their Ph.D. degrees so far. Several research papers have been published by teachers
and scholars of the Department in national and international scientific
journals. Some of our former students have occupied very high positions in
India and abroad in academic and administrative fields.
The Department
has organised several symposia/conference/seminars sponsored by Andhra
University and DST, DBT, CSIR, UGC, INSA etc. such as XXIII annual meeting of
the
Indian Immunology Society, 1996, Recent Developments in
Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1997, 66th annual
meeting of the Society of Biological Chemists (India), 1997, Archaebacteria:
Reflections and Prospects, 2002, Biochemical Energetics and Biological
Membranes: Present Perspectives, 2003, Emerging Trends in Biochemical Education,
2003.
Several research projects have been undertaken by the teaching faculty.
The teaching staff members and research scholars regularly participate in
national and international conferences/symposia/seminars.
The Academic and
Administrative Audit Committee visited the Department and stated "The Department
of Biochemistry is one of the
strongest Departments in the university which has caused the growth of two other
emerging disciplines - Biotechnology and Microbiology". The Department has
also been accredited by NAAC of the UGC along with the other Departments of
Andhra University.
