Department Profile

       The Department of Biotechnology of Andhra University College of Science & Technology was established in 1996. The department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in Biotechnology. All the basic infrastructural facilities needed for conducting teaching and research programmes in different areas of Biotechnology have been developed in the department. The department is housed in a newly constructed permanent building of 20,530 sft consisting of class rooms with audio visual facilities, well equipped student laboratories, research laboratories, special labs for molecular biology, genetic engineering, plant tissue culture and microbial technology. A separate instrumentation room consisting of sophisticated equipment, a reading room with 500 latest text books, a seminar hall with public address system, a conference hall and a systems biology lab with internet connection are also available. Prof. T.M. Radhakrishnan served as the founder coordinator. Prof. T. Ramana is the present Head of the department of Biotechnology.

       So far 11 batches of students have completed their M.Sc. degree course and several of them qualified in CSIR/UGC national level eligibility tests and are working in several prestigious intuitions and industries. Ph.D. programme has been initiated form 2002 and three students obtained their Ph.D. degrees in Biotechnology. The areas of research specialization in the department include microbial technology, enzyme technology, plant biotechnology and bioprocess development. Biotechnology department has successfully organized 12 refresher courses and a training programme in Biotechnology and trained about 300 teachers from different affiliated colleges and university departments.
