Deltas have been shaping
the cultural and socio-economic aspects of mankind since human beings
started attempting to control the land on which they live. Being the
locales of 'constant battle' between fluvial and marine processes,
deltas have become useful not only in providing highly fertile soil that
promote agricultural activity, but also in many other aspects like
fisheries, modification of land forms, marine transport etc.
Additionally, intense hydrocarbon exploration activity in the last one
hundred years has also brought out that 'paleodeltas' are potential
locales for hydrocarbon accumulations.
Thus understanding the
complex geological processes involved in delta building / modification
can unravel many mysteries of the mother earth's complexities and can
eventually help the mankind in many ways.
It is in this background
that the Delta Studies Institute has been conceptualised by Oil and
Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) and Oil Industry Development Board
(OIDB). It is also envisaged that this Institute shall closely interact
with the Industry for mutual benefit. Considering the pioneering
research done in marine geology and its strategic location on the east
coast in proximity to major deltas of
Krishna and Godavari, Andhra
University at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh has been chosen as the most
appropriate location for the Institute.
The Institute was
established in June 1997 in a sprawling flush green land of 8.78 acres
offered by Andhra University.

The Mission
Delta Studies Institute
shall become a renowned centre of excellence that can effectively
provide adequate scientific and technical support for optimal and
economic exploitation of vast and diverse natural resources of deltaic
regions of our country without any adverse impact on socio-economic and
natural environments.
