The Center for Marine
Archaeology, started in 1987, is the only one of its kind in country.
It was stated by Andhra University on a recommendation made by the
undersigned who had hands-on experience in Marine Archaeology in Malaysia,
Australia, Thailand and Singapore. He was associated with the Centre
from 1989, and was its Professor and Director till retirement in 2000.
After this he is still continuing with the Centre as PI of UGC & ISRO
Research Projects.
Excellent academic infrastructure has
been built up at the Centre slowly and painstakingly during the last 12
years which includes

Scindia Library of Maritime History & Marine Archaeology
with over 750 volumes.

Collection of Satellite Imagery of coastal sites.

Teaching materials: 1500 colour slides, 150 OHTs and 15
video on marine archaelogy.

Map library of 50 coastal and ancient maps.

A powerful computer with all modern peripherals is being
installed in the Centre under the ISRO project.
The experience, involvement and
interaction with organizations, institutions & individuals associated with
Marine Archaeology in India enables the Centre to plan a bright future. This
includes

"Adoption" of our Centre by Arch. Survey of India as its
base for east coast operations

Collaborative Project with NIO-RC, Waltair funded by
Dept. of Ocean Development.

Starting the country's only Training facility for Diving
for Science and Sport.

Set up East Coast Consortium for Andhra, Orissa and
Bengal.
In view of the great potential
for this Centre to be a Centre of Excellence and be a leader in Marine
Archaeology in its own right, it is proposed that minimum infrastructure
should be built up for the Centre under 10th plan development funds
estimated Rs 2.0 lakhs.
