27th August, 1927 is considered to
be the foundation day of Andhra University physical Education
Department. It was on this day that the Academic Council adopted a
resolution and recommended the Senate that compulsory Physical training
and regular medical inspection of all the students be introduced in all
the affiliated colleges.
All the students who do not
take part in sports shall undergo a compulsory course of Gymnastics or
any other form of physical training. The Council also mentioned
that exemption should only be given to those students who are declared
unfit by a medical certificate.

Andhra University
Sports Board is having two cricket fields, two hockey fields, two
football fields (one in South Campus and the other in North Campus), two
Basketball courts (one is with Flood-lit facility), two Tennis courts at
Faculty Club with flood-lit facility, two weight-lifting halls and one
24-station multi gymnasium. One Indoor Gymnasium having four
Badminton courts, one volleyball court and one Tennis court is available
in the campus.
The Andhra University Sports Board is conducting Inter Collegiate
Tournaments to 320 Affiliated Colleges including A.U. P.G. Centres and
Campus Colleges every year. The colleges shall be divided in to
Four Zones viz., A,B,C and D Zone. A-Zone consists Colleges in
Visakhapatnam City, B-Zone consists of Visakhapatnam Rural, Vizianagaram
and Srikakulam Districts, C-Zone consists of East Godavari District and
D-Zone consists of West Godavari District. A Hand Book of Rules
and Regulations for Inter Collegiate Tournaments has been recently
published and compiled by Dr. M. Syam Babu, Secretary, Sports Board with
the permission and encouragement given by the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor,
Col. Prof.Y.C.Simhadri.
The Andhra University Sports Board is encouraging the students by
awarding cash incentives for their outstanding performance at various
games and sports in All India Inter-University Tournaments. The
cash incentives for the individual events is Rs. 10,000/- for the first
place (Gold Medal), Rs. 5,000/- for the Second place (Silver Medal) and
Rs. 3,000/- for the Third place (Bronze Medal). For the team
events it is Rs. 5,000/- for each player of the winning team. For
the runners it is Rs. 3,000/- for each player and for the Third place it
is Rs. 1,000/- for each player. Andhra
University teams will participate in the following Inter-University
Tournaments/Championships to be conducted by the various Universities as
entrusted by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
