BETWEEN SPACES OF SILENCE AND VIOLENCE RE-CRITIQUING WOMEN'S WRITING IN ENGLISH

It is undoubted to say that the history of India but for a few out-standing examples has a proven fact with indisputable evidence that its society has largely been characterized by hegemony of patriarchal order. Even after more than half a century of independence the idea that India has achieved real freedom especially in social and economic spheres for large sections of women living in rural areas still remains an elusive dream.

The rise of the educated middle-class and the subsequent education of women after independence though have paved the traditional and conservative Indian social order to an egalitarian society there remains a host of persistent unanswered questions as regards to the social emancipation of women and gender equality.

Literature by women is a site or context where woman tries to break the glass ceiling and enter the world of cultural equality and not be relegated to the level of “Second Sex” Literature plays a crucial role not only in probing and studying atrocities perpetuated on women but also in creating awareness and generating viable alternatives and strategies for social order and survival.
